Portraying her own spiritual journey took Akiane through some of the most frustrating artistic times she had experienced. The family could not afford a big mirror, so a palm-sized mirror was all the eight-year-old-used to portray the right proportions and hues. Repeatedly, she faltered in finding the appropriate flesh tint, but within a few weeks of trial and error she stumbled upon a crude shortcut by simply dabbing the mixed color right onto her nose to make sure it matched her own skin tone.
